A Plaid Cymru Member of the Senedd has called on the Post Office to “do everything in their power” to reinstate services for a community in Blaenau Gwent.
The Post Office has announced that the post office in Cefn Golau will close with immediate effect due to the resignation of the postmaster. In a statement sent out to local politician, the Post Office say they have also lost the use of the current building for Post Office services.
In a statement, Katimay John Network Provision Lead for the Post Office, said: ‘I would like to assure you that we are currently investigating the options available which will enable us to reinstate a Post Office service to the local community. In exploring this, it is important that any future service is sustainable for the person operating the service, and for Post Office Limited.
‘Future provision will reflect customer numbers and usage and we may take the opportunity to establish an alternative type of service. This may be a local style branch which runs alongside an established retail shop in newly refurbished premises and creates a more modern and convenient experience for customers.’
In response, South Wales East MS Peredur Owen Griffiths said: “This is bad news for Cefn Golau, which is a close-knit community isolated from much of Blaenau Gwent.
“The post office provides a vital service for local residents; some of whom will find it difficult or impossible to get to their nearest alternative.
“I will be writing to the Post Office today to ask that they do everything in their power to ensure this service is reinstated for the community as soon as possible.”
