The influential Senedd Finance Committee, chaired by MS Peredur Owen Griffiths, will come to Blaenau Gwent. It is believed to be the first time this committee has held a meeting in the constituency.
The committee will hold a meeting at the Llanhilleth Miners’ Institute tomorrow.
Mr Owen Griffiths, who covers Blaenau Gwent within the South Wales East region he represents, said the meeting was a positive step.
“It is great to take the Finance Committee out of our usual setting down Cardiff Bay,” said Mr Owen Griffiths.
“Good scrutiny leads to good government so committees like the Finance Committee are a vital and integral part of democracy.
“The Finance Committee provides some of the necessary checks and balances on government budget spending.
“I hope that by bringing these hearings closer to communities in Wales like Llanhilleth we can promote a greater understanding of the Senedd and its functions.
“This is particularly important ahead of the Senedd reforms which are going through at the moment.”
Peredur added: “The Llanhilleth Miners’ Institute is an historic and iconic building that means a lot to people in the local area and beyond.
“It is one of the finest surviving examples of these buildings which were funded from the hard-earned contributions of miners, all in the name of improving their community and the prospects of the future generations.
“It is a pleasure to be chairing our next meeting in such an illustrious setting that I am already familiar with. I am looking forward to welcoming other members of the committee and committee staff to the Stute and seeing what they make of it.”
