A Plaid Cymru MS has welcomed the official opening of the newest hospital within Wales.

Peredur Owen Griffiths MS was at the opening ceremony of The Grange University Hospital near Cwmbran within his region of South Wales East.

Also present at the event at the £350 million, 560-bed facility were many NHS staff drawn from various departments across the Aneurin Bevan Health Board.

Peredur said afterwards: “It was great to see the hospital for the first time with my own eyes. It’s an impressive looking hospital and everyone involved in the planning and building of it have to be commended for completing it ahead of schedule to increase local capacity and help the health board treat coronavirus patients.

“The event today provided an opportunity to meet with NHS staff who spoke of their efforts in combatting Covid and keeping our population safe – work which continues to the present day.

“In speaking to various staff – from the most senior to those involved in ensuring ward rooms were kitted out with beds and equipment – the commitment and dedication to the NHS shone through at every level.”

Peredur added: “As with any new hospital, I was told about some teething problems which can be expected. I only hope that these can be remedied sooner, rather than later, as our staff and patients deserve that, especially after the last 18 months they have endured.”
