A Plaid Cymru MS has thanked volunteers for all their hard work and dedication as the end of Volunteers’ Week draws to a close.
Peredur Owen Griffiths, who represents the South Wales East region, said that volunteers were “the backbone of communities” throughout his region and hailed their contributions throughout the year.
Taking place between 1-7 June every year, Volunteers Week is supported and celebrated by grassroots organisations and provides an opportunity for all volunteers to be recognised.
Peredur said: “Volunteers are so vital to their communities so it is right and proper that we take some time to salute the role they play.
“Since my election last year, I have visited a number of groups and clubs that are run entirely by volunteers. By giving up their free time they provide enjoyment for the community and help combat loneliness and promote good mental health.
“The worth of volunteers was underlined during the pandemic when many rallied around the most vulnerable to ensure they had their food shopping done and their prescriptions were collected.
“They stepped up to provide an essential service when there was little alternative and that should never be forgotten.
“Volunteers throughout Wales are the backbone of their communities and are an inspiration - long may that continue.”
