A Plaid Cymru MS has called on the Labour Government to accelerate plans to give a pay rise to social care staff.
Peredur Owen Griffiths, who represents South Wales East, called on the First Minister to bring forward plans for a fairer wage for those working in social care. The government has said they will ensure care workers in Wales “enjoy fairer pay by 2024.” Peredur told the government he wanted the pay rise to come in earlier in light of the rising cost of living.
During First Minister’s questions in the Senedd, Peredur said that he and his Senedd colleague, Delyth Jewell, had recently met with the Caerffili County Borough Council Leader Phillipa Marsden and Cabinet Member for Social Services, Shane Cook, in connection with the reduction in day centre provision for disabled adults.
Peredur said: “During that meeting, it was stressed by them that the recruitment of social care staff is difficult and will continue to be so until there is parity between their wages and NHS staff.
“Can you accelerate your plans for fairer pay for social care workers in light of household budgets being squeezed with winter fuel prices increasing?
In reply, the First Minister said his government will wait for the advice of the social care fair work forum before they “roll out a real living wage” for staff in the sector.
