Plaid Cymru’s Peredur Owen Griffiths has attended the official opening of an innovative project in Blaenau Gwent that will make the National Grid more resilient.
The Senedd Member for South Wales East was at the unveiling of a synchronous condenser installation at Rassau that has been 18 months in the making and has cost in excess of £35 million.
The worker-owned company Welsh Power are behind the project and they have collaborated with Siemens Energy and renewables investment manager Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners to bring it to fruition.
The facility provides grid stability services include inertia, short circuit power to ensure a reliable operation and reactive power for voltage control.
Peredur said: “I was impressed by the technology, as well as the skill and expertise that has gone into this local facility that plays a key role in the energy sector.
“This technology is needed as more and more renewable energy projects come on stream and we move away from the traditional power station model.”
He added: “It is particularly pleasing that a worker-owned, home-grown company has pulled all this together. I wish Welsh Power all the best with this project and look forward to seeing what they do next.”
