A Plaid Cymru MS has called for a “robust and comprehensive response” from Welsh Government after news emerged that house prices have increased highest in Wales across the UK.

Peredur Owen Griffiths MS, who covers South Wales East and has responsibility for communities in his portfolio, said it is was concerning that some of the highest price increases were seen in constituencies he represents such as Blaenau Gwent, Torfaen and Merthyr Tydfil.

He said: “News of further house prices are worrying for communities across Wales where people are already struggling with the cost of affording a home.

“Much coverage has been given to the impact on coastal communities in Wales but as we have seen from the latest figures, some of the biggest price increases have been in my region of South Wales East.

“I know from constituents and friends how spiralling house price increases are affecting people and local communities. This upward trend will place further pressure on many people, but will impact first time buyers in particular.

“It will also threaten the viability of our communities if people can no longer afford to live in the place where they call home.”

Peredur added: “There needs to be a robust and comprehensive response from Welsh Government to ensure that communities in Wales are not hollowed out. There is no time for tinkering around the edges of this growing problem.”
