Peredur Welcomes Funding Boost for Children’s Hospices

Plaid Cymru’s Peredur Owen Griffiths has welcomed news that children’s hospices in Wales will get a much improved budget boost.

The Member of the Senedd for South Wales East was speaking after it was revealed that Tŷ Hafan in the south and Tŷ Gobaith in the north will receive 21% of their funding from state sources. Previously they received less than 10% of their funding from state sources compared to 50% for children’s hospices in Scotland.

Peredur has been campaigning for the hospices to be given more state funding since his election last year.

He said: “This is very welcome news for the two hospices and the sick children they help. They will be able to offer more care for children and more respite for the families.

“The lack of state funding put children’s hospices in Wales at a distinct disadvantage; especially when compared to their counterparts in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

“Hospices are still more generously funded elsewhere but this is a good starting point to allow our hospices to provide the services and support they want to deliver for our sickest children and their families.

“This has been a long-time coming but this day has been worth the wait for it has delivered for our most vulnerable children. I’m so relieved and happy at the news.”
