Flood Review a “Step in the Right Direction” - Peredur

A Plaid Cymru Member of the Senedd has welcomed the news that an independent review into flooding will take place in Wales.

Peredur Owen Griffiths, who represents South Wales East, was reacting to the news that a review will consider evidence from investigations carried out by local authorities and Natural Resources Wales.

Led by leading barrister Elwen Evans QC, the review is a key part of the co-operation agreement between Labour and Plaid Cymru.

Peredur said he hoped the exercise would learn from the mistakes made by various agencies in the build-up and aftermath of Storm Dennis.

He also said he was hopeful that “lasting solutions to the increasing dangers of the climate emergency” could be developed as a result of the review.

“Many parts of my region were hit hard following Storm Dennis,” said Peredur. “Many people in places like Llanhilleth, Ystrad Mynach and large swathes of Monmouthshire still feel uneasy whenever there is heavy rain because they are afraid history will repeat itself.

“It is unfair that people have to live this way. We know that increased rainfall is more likely in future  so it is vital that we ensure that agencies charged with mitigating and responding to floods have the resources they need.

“We also need to come up with lasting solutions to the increasing dangers of the climate emergency. While this review stops short of the independent public inquiry Plaid Cymru called for, it is a step in the right direction.

“I hope it leads to our communities being better protected and residents in flood-hit communities having the peace of mind they crave.”
