Labour Government Could and Should Do More about Cost-of-Living Crisis – Peredur

A Plaid Cymru MS has called on the Labour Government to use its powers to protect people in Wales from the cost-of-living crisis.

Peredur Owen Griffiths has said Ministers in Wales could be more proactive on seeking to protect communities from the rising cost of everyday essential items such as food and energy.

The MS for South Wales East has endorsed Plaid Cymru’s calls for a:

  • Halving of train fares and a cap on bus fares.
  • Freezing of rents.
  • An extension of free school meals to secondary school pupils.

The party is also keeping up the pressure on the Tory Government to act swiftly in the face of the growing crisis by calling for a return to pre-April energy prices to bring down household bills and an extension of support available for small businesses and charities.

Peredur said: “The cost of living crisis is the most serious and immediate of the challenges that face governments within the UK. Many lives are at stake – that is how serious this is.

“We’ve seen a robust plan put together by the SNP Government to protect its citizens but that action has not been forthcoming in other quarters.

“The Tory Government is sleep walking into a disaster. In the absence of a serious plan from Westminster to help people, it is incumbent upon the Government of Wales to do all it can to protect people in this country.

“This is why Plaid Cymru is renewing calls for a raft of policies such as a reduction in public transport costs, the freezing of rents and an extension of the free school meal policy to soften the blow this winter.

“It is not too late to carry out these actions and protect people in Wales ahead of what could be a very tough winter.”
